Voip-Pal.Com, a provider of broadband VoIP solutions for local and long distance telephony to business and residential customers, has received the notice of allowance for its patent application “Intercepting Voice over IP Communications and Other Data Communications (News - Alert).”

The application was filed by Voip-Pal’s wholly owned subsidiary Digifonica (International) Limited in November 29, 2007 as a PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) application. It later succeeded in the International phase and then entered the National phase in many countries, including the U.S.  

The Lawful or Legal Intercept patent application details how law enforcement agencies can monitor VoIP calls of persons of interest. The technology addresses the hurdles of recording Internet calls. Legacy technologies rely on recording functionality of telephony switches and/or taps installed in major Internet hubs.

With multitudes of Internet access methods, following the path of Internet calls becomes extremely challenging. Digifonica’s solution addresses these challenges.

Digifonica’s invention describes how to monitor VoIP calls right on the VoIP provider’s equipment, independent of access methods (Wi-Fi, DSL, Cable, Wimax etc). The advantage of this technology is that it is independent of administrative, political or geographical boundaries. In other words, any call originated from across the world, as long as it has an account with a VoIP provider, can be monitored.

Further, if the caller or the callee changes their Internet access from one Wi-Fi hotspot to another, their calls can still be intercepted in a legally acceptable way. The technology allows agencies to monitor calls even if the intercept target is using DID  (Direct Inward Dial legacy PSTN number) for his VoIP phone.What makes Digifonica’s Lawful Intercept solution unique is its absolute stealth mode, so it can be an ideal solution to track unethical or criminal practices across VoIP.
